Moana is the daughter of the village chief of Motunui and was chosen by the ocean as a child to restore the heart of Tefiti, the life-creating goddess. However, it isn’t until things go sorely bad that she responds to the call of the ocean that has plagued her since she was a child.

Did Moana Die in The Storm?
Disney never confirmed it, but a certain fan’s theory suggests that Moana died in the thunderstorm at the beginning of the movie. This theory is supported especially by the fact that, after her ship capsized, Moana only encounters her dead grandmother, gods, demigods, and other legendary creatures (like Te ka the shiny crab), making it look like she died.
In my opinion, Moana did not die, and fan theories are nothing more than baseless speculation. Recall that the ocean already chose Moana when she was a toddler and apparently the ocean could communicate and even make Moana’s hair. It is not entirely impossible to find oxygen underwater, fish bubbles can carry little portions of oxygen. So, if the ocean could make Moana’s hair, why wouldn’t it save her life? ..
